YOUTH ACTIVITIES

This contest is open to all children or students from the fourth through the twelfth grades. Entries will be judged in three categories: elementary (grades 4-6), junior high (grades 7-8), and senior high (grades 9-12).

All poster submissions should depict the fair theme: "Healthy Food and a Safe Environment Make Sen$e"

Contest rules:

• Essays must be formatted using a 12-point font, double spaced with a 1” margin.
• Format essays using header with the essay title and the Page 1 of ___ pagination.
  
• Essays must adhere to the following word-count guidelines:
  • Elementary (4th – 6th grades)        300 – 500 words
  • Junior High (7th – 8th grades)        500 – 750 words
  • Senior High (9th – 12th grades)      750 – 1000 words; cite at least two (2) sources
• All essays must be submitted electronically to sdahl@uvi.edu
  
• The following information must be included as a cover sheet:
  
  • Title of essay
  • Student’s name
  • School or group affiliation
  • Grade
  • Teacher/adult sponsor

Essays will be judged on:

• expression of the fair theme,
• originality,
• evidence of research and educational thought; Sr. High entries must cite at least two (2) sources
• artistic merit and creativity, and
• neatness, grammatical correctness and literary appeal.

First, second and third place finishers will be awarded prizes. Winning posters will be prominently displayed at the fair.

All entries must be submitted electronically to the Director of Youth Activities and/or the 4-H Office located in the UVI Research and Extension Center, Room 116, on or before 4:30 p.m. on Friday, February 5, 2010. Judging of entries will take place on Wednesday, February 10, 2010.
